 BIG SIGNAL Balun 2:1
2:1 Current Balun for Matching Balanced Antennas to 50-Ohm Coaxial Feed Lines
The BIG SIGNAL Balun 2:1 is a high-performance current balun with a 2:1 impedance transformation ratio, designed to provide the proper transition between a 50-ohm unbalanced coaxial feed line and a balanced antenna or driven element with an impedance close to 112 Ohms.
In addition to providing impedance transformation, its current-balun configuration promotes a balanced current distribution between both sides of the driven element and helps limit common-mode currents that may flow along the outside surface of the coaxial cable shield.
Type: current balun with impedance transformation
Ratio: 2:1
Application: balanced antennas with impedance close to 112 Ohms
Feed line: 50-ohm coaxial cable
Primary function: impedance transformation, current balancing, and common-mode current suppression
Typical applications: dipoles / loops / directional antennas and other compatible balanced antenna systems

Why Use a 2:1 Current Balun?
• Transforms impedance
Its 2:1 ratio allows balanced antennas with a higher feed-point impedance to be matched to a conventional 50-ohm coaxial feed line, providing the proper transition between the two systems.
• Balances current in the driven element
Helps maintain symmetrical current distribution between both sides of a balanced antenna, allowing the antenna system to operate more closely to its intended design.
• Reduces common-mode currents
Helps limit unwanted currents that may flow along the outside surface of the coaxial cable shield, reducing unwanted participation of the feed line in the radiating system.
• Helps preserve the radiation pattern
By reducing unwanted radiation from the coaxial feed line, it can help minimize asymmetry and distortion of the antenna's radiation pattern.
• Improves feed-line isolation
Provides a more controlled transition between the unbalanced coaxial feed line and the balanced antenna element, helping electrically decouple the feed line from the radiating system.
• Can reduce unwanted RF in the shack
Reducing common-mode currents can help minimize RF conducted back toward the radio shack along the outside of the coaxial feed line, as well as certain RFI and equipment-coupling issues.

Impedance Matching and Balanced Antenna Feeding
The BIG SIGNAL Balun 2:1 is especially well suited for feeding balanced antennas with a feed-point impedance close to 112 Ohms from a 50-ohm coaxial feed line, combining impedance transformation, current balancing, and common-mode current suppression in a single device.
Dipoles with compatible feed-point impedances.
Loops and loop antennas requiring a 2:1 transformation ratio.
Directional antennas with balanced driven elements.
• Systems requiring a transition from 50 Ohms to a higher balanced impedance.
• Installations where common-mode current suppression is required.
• Stations requiring improved isolation between the antenna and coaxial feed line.
2:1 Transformation. Balanced Currents. Better Control of Your Antenna System.
The BIG SIGNAL Balun 2:1 combines impedance transformation with current-balun operation, helping match balanced antennas to 50-ohm coaxial feed lines, balance driven-element currents, and reduce common-mode currents.
