BIG SIGNAL CQ-2
Real Performance on 2 Meters. Compact, Versatile, and Efficient.
The BIG SIGNAL CQ-2 is a full-wave, single-band antenna specifically designed for the 2-meter / 145 MHz band, offering a compact solution for operators looking for an alternative to a conventional vertical antenna.
Its closed-loop geometry, compact dimensions, and ability to be installed for either vertical or horizontal polarization make the CQ-2 an exceptionally versatile antenna for terrestrial communications, repeaters, beacons, satellites, portable operation, and installations where space is limited.
Band: 2 meters / 145 MHz
Type: Full-wave single-band closed loop
Elements: 1
Polarization: Vertical or horizontal
Size: Ultra-compact
Installation: Quick and easy
Recommended Use: Terrestrial communications / Repeaters / Satellites / Beacons / Portable operation / Limited-space installations
Why Choose the BIG SIGNAL CQ-2?
• Full-Wave Element for 2 Meters
The CQ-2 uses a full-wave closed loop optimized for 145 MHz, with no loading coils, traps, or electrically shortened elements. Its electrically straightforward design is engineered to make efficient use of the entire radiating element.
• Clean Reception and Excellent Signal-to-Noise Ratio
Its closed-loop geometry can help reduce the pickup of certain types of electrical noise, providing cleaner reception and making weak signals easier to hear, particularly in urban environments.
• Compact and Low Profile
Its compact size makes it suitable for locations where larger antennas can be difficult to install, including balconies, rooftops, temporary installations, portable stations, and other space-restricted locations.
• Vertical or Horizontal Polarization
Polarization can be selected during installation, allowing the CQ-2 to be matched to the intended operating mode: vertical for FM, repeaters, and local communications, or horizontal for SSB, FT8, and DX.
• Exceptional Operating Versatility
In addition to terrestrial 2-meter communications, its geometry and radiation pattern make it suitable for applications such as repeaters, beacons, satellite reception, and satellite operation.
• More Stable Reception with Polarization Changes
The loop geometry provides useful characteristics when receiving signals whose polarization may vary during propagation, helping maintain more stable reception under certain conditions.
• Rugged Construction and Easy Installation
Designed for outdoor use and manufactured from durable materials, the CQ-2 combines low weight, easy installation, and minimal maintenance.
A Different Alternative to the Traditional Vertical
• Full-wave element optimized for 145 MHz.
• Closed-loop design.
• Vertical or horizontal polarization, selectable during installation.
• Compact dimensions and minimal visual impact.
• Excellent choice for FM, SSB, FT8, repeaters, and satellite operation.
• Ideal for balconies, rooftops, portable operation, and limited-space installations.
High Performance Doesn't Have to Mean a Large Antenna.
The BIG SIGNAL CQ-2 combines a full-wave design, low-noise reception, selectable polarization, and compact dimensions in a simple and versatile antenna designed to get more out of the 2-meter band.
BIG SIGNAL CQ-2 ? My First Ham Radio Antenna
As a newly licensed ham operator, I was eager to get on the air, and the BIG SIGNAL CQ-2 became my first antenna choice. I mounted it just 20 cm above my roofline in Dubai, and I must say, it has exceeded my expectations.
With current tropospheric ducting conditions in the Middle East, I was thrilled to hear mobile stations in Muscat, Oman, a staggering 350 km away with a signal report of 5-9! The 2-meter QSOs are impressively clear, and my signal reports confirm that I am being heard just as well.
One of the most surprising aspects of this antenna is the amazing noise floor. At first, I thought something was wrong because I was getting zero noise, a rare experience in urban environments. However, incoming signals were loud and crystal clear, proving that the antenna is doing its job efficiently.
For a compact and lightweight omnidirectional antenna, the CQ-2 is proving to be a fantastic choice for my setup. Whether you're a beginner like me or an experienced ham looking for a great portable or base station option, this antenna is definitely worth considering. You can also install it as a directional antenna.
Pros:
- Excellent RX/TX performance even at a low mounting height
- Extremely low noise floor
- Clear 2m QSOs over long distances
- Lightweight, very small and easy to install
The BIG SIGNAL 4BS-2 is still waiting to be built as I'm waiting for the rotor to be delivered. Looking forward to working that one as a directional antenna.
So far, I'm more than satisfied with the BIG SIGNAL CQ-2. I look forward to testing it in different conditions and seeing what else it can do!
